Design Tip: Create a Bigger Look for Small Room

If you live in a small flat or home and you prefer to create a feeling of a larger room, there are a lot of things you can do. Two of the best things you can do are, 1) create focal points and 2) take advantage of reflection. These two things will create a bigger look and feel of the smaller rooms.

Making a focal point in a small room is the key because you don’t want people taking notice of how small the room actually is. Once you have a specific focal point, the room could be more interesting and appear a little bit bigger.

You can do this by painting one wall in the room another or darker color making your room an uncluttered gallery effect by use of a low hanging lights and putting together artwork on the wall. This will give an opening effect on the room.

When you use reflection to make a room bigger, you'll use things in your home that reflect like mirrors, furniture, metallic pieces, and things that are shiny.

When these details are strategically placed all over the home or the room they give an impression of light and more space. A mirror can be located strategically in a room to reflect open air or even a window or a doorway which makes the room seem much bigger than it is and it takes in more light.

If you're seeking to take away the focus from the small size of a room and get it to look bigger then you can capitalize on the use of reflections and creating focal points. Controlling these two methods can make your home or room look much larger.
